Black Sheep

For us, the movie was really frightening and it was convincing because it’s a true story, it’s a testimony. We found that it’s really brave that this guy could talk about those hard moments in his life. During the short film, we didn’t need the subtitles to understand him, because he talks with his heart. The fights shocked us, it contained a lot of violence and injustice. It’s difficult to imagine the violence of this world and that makes us feel sad. We can just feel empathy for the victims of racism. The film was so powerful that it gave us food for thought.

The cast was brillant and really convincing. We’ve loved the contrast between the young Cornelius and his interview when he is older. We have two favourite striking scenes :

When the young white kid calls him  » nigga  » and mimes a monkey, then Cornelius realises that he has moved in a racist village and that even the youngest inhabitants are racist.

The second striking scene for us is when the black and white teens insult each other. It shows that the rivalry is not just between the two gangs or crews, but between black people and white people.

In conclusion, this short movie shows us how  difficult it is to be accepted by others and to try to fit in when you’re different and discriminated against. Sometimes we make the wrong choice, but that doesn’t mean we are bad people.

People shouldn’t miss this documentary! It’s an impressive portrayal of racism and discrimination.

On a scale from zero to five, we give this film a five/five.

Film review about ‘Inanimate’

Inanimate is an animation that talks about one girl whose life is passing very fast. The special effects were breathtaking because it was pretty for an animation, pictures after pictures. This movie gave us food for thought.

The movie is an animation so there is no perfomance of  actors but the storyline was brillant. Another thing we really liked was the mix of two universes;  the human world and the fictional and unrealistic universe.

The subtiles were understandable, the script writing was excellent but the end was a little bit complicated to understand. The most powerful scene was when the main character wakes up because it was unexpected, indeed, we thought she had passed away.

To conclude, Inanimate is an animated short film that is thought provoking and incredible. It’s a must see if you like animation.

V

We have chosen to write about the short film V. First, we will deal with  its plot, then the characters of the film and the topic with our opinion. To conclude, we’ll explain our final opinion as well as the feelings that we had while watching this fictional short film.

The main character is a girl. She lives alone in a little flat because her mother died, she was very  ill. She drinks blood, just like a vampire. She thinks she is a vampire. She speaks a lot about a guy,  his name is Chris. He may have been her boyfriend, and he might have transformed her into a vampire while having sexual relations. We think the storyline is both weird and moving. It was hard to really understand the plot and we think that the director may have wanted to show how people can easily be manipulated.

In conclusion, we liked this movie because it was very intriguing but we would have liked to have more information about the topic before watching it. We would recommend it to anyone who likes supernatural, vampires and fantasy  intriguing stories. To conclude, on a scale from zero to five we give this film a four.

Inanimate film review

Inanimate is an eight-minute animated short-film, directed by Lucia Bulgheroni. Inanimate tells the story of a girl who’s called Katrine and enjoyed her life, but one day, she understands that her world is not the reality and that all the society is fake, everything is controled by the humans. This short animation movie was created by 16 people but approximatively 100 were there to design the scenes, characters and lets. It was released on February 2018 after 14 months of work.

We think Inanimate was a very good short film. The link between the reality and the fiction was interesting. It gave us food for thought. It showed the reality of our world. The special effects were breathtaking and  we can see that people took a lot of time to build each element. There was not much conversation but the images that tell the story were thought provoking and there were a lot of metaphors to explain real facts with animation.

This short movie explains that what we think is real, sometimes is fake. To prove it, the film director gave some examples in the movie. We can see the main character katrine, in different daily situations ( for example at the supermarket) where she discovers that she is just a puppet and that her husband is fake too. Finally, Inanimate well portrays our society. It shows that we spend too much money on fake things. We also know that  Katrine looks like the film director: same hair, same eyes. This animation is indeed about her life and reflection.

In conclusion, we liked this animation, it was absolutely amazing. It was a very good topic to cover. Furthermore, the special effects were breathtaking, there were a lot of details in the scenery and it was  beautifully designed. We really loved this movie for all of this. So we recommend it to anyone! We can’t wait to watch the director’s next movie in preparation. Unfortunately they didn’t win This is England Festival but what they did is worth seeing.

Strange days review

Strange days

Today we present the short film: Strange days. The story talks about a girl, Nina. She likes to be desired by Eli, who the most beautiful boy in highschool. But Eli wants to be Carla’s boyfriend as well. Eli is the cause of the hostility between Carla and Nina.

There are different settings in the storyline: the beach, a public place, a market and the house of Eli’s friend.

The main character is Nina, the narrator of this story. She relates the night when Carla disappeared. She is Eli’s girlfriend and the last person who saw Carla before she disappeared.

The topic is about relationship and friendship. Nina thinks that she is responsible for Carla’s disappearance and she can’t get over it. She can’t help thinking about it.

In our opinion, the performance of the actors was very good. The most captivating scene is when Nina opens the door and sees Carla for the last time.

The best scene is the scene with the dog for us.

The most interesting character is Eli because his personality is very complex: at the beginning he seems to be a good person but after a while we realize that he is very manipulative : he likes the two girls but he  does something wrong that probably hurts Carla.

We finally understand that, later, Nina has forgotten Eli but not Carla. She really feels guilty.

People shouldn’t miss this short film. On a scale from zero to five, we give this film a four.

Our Film review on « The Clanker Man »

We have chosen to write about « The Clanker Man », which is a short film we watched during « This is England » Festival 2018.

« The Clanker Man » is a ten-minute mokumentary by Ben Steiner. This genre is very popular in England, more than in France.

The main character is a clanker man whose job consists of making noises in the city. In the movie, his job is secret and he acts very protective towards it. The Clanker man finds his job hard and seems sad about it being a secret. He wishes more people knew about it and respected his job instead of yelling at him.

The other characters are a cameraman showing up in one scene and a citizen who’s getting mad at the Clanker man for doing his job.

In conclusion we can say that this movie is a comedy of a non-existing job, which makes it funnier. It was a laugh riot and we think this was one of the best movies shown in « This is England Festival 2018 ».

The film review about the short animation « Enough »

Enough is a two-minute funny animated film about people who are fed up with their lives. In this animation, we can see many different scenes with different short storytlines, it’s like a compilation of many really short stories that are a few seconds long. In every scene, one person who is on edge does something he would have never done before because it’s impolite. For example, in one scene, someone breaks a window or hurts someonelse because they’re exhausted and can’t cope with the situation anymore.

There were loads of different characters in « Enough ». There was a range of kids, elderly and adults. There was no main character in the movie because it was divided into many short clips with different people in each.

The topic of the film is about people who are fed up with being polite and they start doing things that aren’t acceptable in society, for example, in one scene, we can see someone pushing two people down the stairs in the underground, in an other, a woman can’t stand her job anymore, so she throws her computer out of the office’s window.

We think this short film was extremely funny to watch and very enjoyable, we definitely recommend it.

In conclusion, we can say that this short animated movie is a laugh riot but there’s also a message behind it. Sometimes, our society expects too much from people, so they are always on edge.

Finally, they can’t take it anymore and snap.

Our film review about « clanker man »

Our favorite short film in « this is England » festival was « Clanker man ». It was directed by Ben Steiner and it was a ten-minute mockumentary.

The main character is a man whose job is to make racket. Throughout the mockumentary, he explains the concept of « clanking ». For example, he hits everything with his crowbar, shouts in  the street and in the forest, puts urine on matresses. There are two characters : the clanker man and the interviewer. But, of course, there is a management team as well. In our opinion, it was a laugh riot because the clanker man is very serious when talking about his job even if sound silly. It was the funniest short film of the day. The story is very simple but effective thanks to a very good directing. The most powerful scene was when he shouts at night outside the city. It’s the final scene and it was a good ending.

To conclude, the topic is very interesting and it’s very original to show a fake job in a mockumentary.

We recommend this short film because the main character’s job is completely crazy and his performance was hilarious.

Our film review

Clanker Man is an eleven-minute short mockumentary shot by ben Steiner in 2017 It was laugh riot because the actor was  very talented and we could almost believe that it was real. This  subject was excellent and funny. We think it was cool to invent a job to explain why we can sometimes hear incredible noises and see annoying things in the street, like graffitis or stinky mattresses.

We highly really recommand this short movie

Our review about the short film Black Sheep

Black Sheep is the short film we like the best. It’s a twenty-minute documentary directed by Ed Perkins.

A black boy is discriminated against and is the target of a bully : a gang of white teenagers because he’s black. He changes his appearance to fit in and he finally becomes like them, that is to say mean, violent and narrow-minded.

This documentary talks about the difficult integration of a black boy. It was heart breaking since it’s an important topic that concerns a lot of young people mentally and physically. It gave us food for thought and the plot was intriguing. The performance of the cast was brillant. The man who relates his story is moved because it’s hard for him to talk about what happened to him and how far he went to fit in. The young actor is extremely convincing.

This short film is very realistic. We think that it’s excellent because the actors performance in the fictional part is very good and Cornelius’s personality is very interesting as well.

The script writing is excellent and the story can touch everyone. The point of view of an adult is important to understand the situation. We would recommend it to anyone but it needs to be explained to children.

The short film « Enough » is a two-minute animation by Anna Mantzaris. The characters are puppets.

The topic was about annoying things in everyday life, and it was shown in such a way it can only make the audience laugh; so it was laugh riot for us : for example, a puppet is on her computer, and it cannot control itself anymore, so the puppet takes the computer to throw him it out of the window. It explains the title of the film : « Enough », which means « I can’t cope with it anymore ». The puppets were very funny to watch because they are always angry or fed up and it’s hilarious.

To conclude, we really like this funny animates short film, and on a scale from zero to five,we’ll give it five .

We highly recommend this animation to people who like laughing while watching a movie.

Mamoon’s review

Our favorite movie is Mamoon. The film maker is Ben Steer. We will talk about the characters, the topic and our feelings. It’s a six-minute animation. It’s a silent animation.

The plot is interesting. The opening scene is a normal city with normal people and suddendly the darkness invades the city but just one pregnant wife survives. She is white all over the dark city, white like purity. She walks a lot and she sits somewhere and gives birth. Then there is a red drop falling of the sky, the mother takes it and puts it on her baby so that it grows into a child. Finally , the red baby falls down and the white mother falls into the darkness.

The movie is open to interpretation. It can comment on childhood, motherhood and life. The characters look sweet and fragile.

Finally, the movie was  breathtaking visually as much as emotionally.

When we talked about this movie, nobody had the same point of view.

Film Review : Mamoon

We are going to present the film « Mamoon ». It’s a six-minute short animation film that was directed and animated by Ben Steiner.

There are two main characters ; a mother and her child. They’re not real, they are all made of lights and shadows. We can see, along the film, that the mother wants to run away, to escape with her child to protect him or her. We can feel that it’s heart warming and also heartbreaking, because at the end, the main characters who are so much connected, aren’t together anymore.

To us, this animation is sad but we can feel a lot of positive and negative feelings at the same time and the music theme is also very important to make us feel it. To conclude, we can think that this topic is very open, it could deal with motherhood, childhood, a relationship between a mother and a child or humans’ life. Of course, it’s a  short film that we really enjoyed watching and a very good one.

Our review on Clanker Man

This short film is a ten-minute mockumentary directed by Ben Steiner. The main character is Eli Silverman a « clanker man » whose job is to make the noises you hear in the streets while not knowing their origins. It was a laugh riot, and the scene with the creepy doll was extremely funny. The idea of making a fake documentary was brillant and amusing. The way Eli behaves in front of the interviewer is great acting and hilarious. We also enjoyed the scene where Eli gets upset and leaves the shooting and the funniest scene is when a neighbor gets out in the street and gets upset while Eli explains that he has to keep being noisy for two hours more. To conclude, « Clanker Man » is a smart idea, a funny short film and it’s worth seeing!

We  recommend this funny mockumentary.

Black Sheep

We are going to write about Black Sheep because we really like this short film.

Black Sheep is a twenty-seven-minute documentary by Ed Pakins.

We are interested in the issue of racism and we think the scenes that depict Cornelius when he was young are shot in the most realistic way.

Black Sheep portrays a black family that moves to the countryside because they think London is dangerous for people like them (a young black boy has just been killed). It turns to be a bad decision because people in countryside and in the town they chose to move in are racist. Cornelius is rejected (insulted, hit, molested…) and he decides to become like his bullies and joins a racist group just to fit in .

We love this documentary because it’s very interesting and it’s about racism. It was heartbreaking. Nora thinks the performance of the cast was brillant, Pauline didn’t agree on that point.

But we both find this short film excellent.

film review about Strange days

Strange days is an eleven-minute fiction by Alice Seabright. Nina can’t stop thinking about carla, who went missing when they were teenagers.

In this short film, they are three main characters- Nina, Carla and Eli. The performance of the cast  was brillant because we can feel the character’s emotions. It’s a story about relationship between teenagers and the way that things can go wrong. The saddest scene was when Eli doesn’t welcome Carla at his party because we understand that he put her life in danger since she disappears and never comes back. It made us feel uncomfortable and a little bit sad for Carla.

We would recommend it to anyone who likes thought provoking teenagers-centered movies.

Domestic Policy TIE

                           Domestic Policy

Domestic policy is a seven-minute short fiction film directed by Alicia MacDonald in 2016 but the story takes place after the first world war. This film was ranked third in « This is England festival ».

We find this film realistic and funny but also heartbreaking because the film shows the reality about women’s fight to be equal and sexism in the whole world. The story is extremely interesting because, in the story, women are mistreated and considered inferior and, sometimes, it is still the same today. We also enjoyed the suspense. At the beginning of the film we were very upset because some of the politicians are misogynists.

The script was perfectly written. The setting creates a certain atmosphere, a little bit tense. The most captivating scene is when the servant eats the paper. When we watched it, we were surprised but at the same time we were joyful because it’s a good ending. After the film, we were happy but at the same time a little bit hurt by the men’s mean comments in the movie.

We recommend this film because it’s good and thought-provoking. It’s a great piece of film making and it’s one of our favorite films.

Kin

It’s a a fifteen- minute drama, social and fiction film. This short film was directed by Helena Middleton and produced by Vine Hill Films.

It’s a film about two brothers who lost their mom when they were very young. Next to this, they were sent in a family care home. One of them, the older and now a young adult wants the custody of his brother but it is rejected. The film won the student price of « This is England Festival ».

It was heartbreaking because the older brother had to make a really difficult choice : either he keeps his little brother or does what is the best for him; that is to say, let him go and live in a foster family.

The actor performance was brillant, they acted well, especially the two brothers, Joseph Quinn and Jack Hollington, the younger.

The best thing about this film is the fact that it’s a realistic story , a story that could really happen.

The saddest scene was when the family care home worker comes to bring Jack back to the family care home.

People shouldn’t miss it and watch it. On a scale from zero to one we give a 4.5.

To conclude, we definitly recommend it for people who like sentimal and emotional films.

The Party

The Party

We have chosen to write about the short movie « the party » which was directed by Andrea Harkin. It is a fiction inspired by « the troubles » that took place in the 70’s in Northern Ireland. It lasts 15 minutes and was released in 2016. This short film won 2 awards (at « Cork film festival’s Nomination for the European film family » and the « award excellence – Global Short ») but there are a lot of other nominations without any results yet.

We thought that the movie was brilliant, there were a lot of emotions (first it was funny and then it started to become emotional with a lot of sad things such as an attack). We like the fact that there is a historic context (that we totally discovered) and the actors were great in their roles.

The script was well written because even though we didn’t know these historic events, it was well explained because we understood quite everything. There was a real atmosphere which became increasingly oppressive because the plot is about the conflict in Northen Ireland which started in the late 60’s. There was a discrimination against the catholics in Northern Ireland and a conflict with the protestants, some catholics joined the IRA (Irish Republican Army) and committed crimes. There were a lot of innocent victims because of the attacks (it turned into a kind of civil war). The conflict lasted 30 years. The end of the film wasn’t expected and very emotional. The most striking scene was probably when Mickey’s friends were shot.

After watching the film, we felt sad and were curious about the entire context of those years because we didn’t know what really happened in Northern Ireland.

People shouldn’t miss this movie because it’s very interesting. On a scale from 0 to 5, we would give a 5 to this movie.

Firecracker

Firecracker is a fifteen-minute fiction directed by Jonathan K Harris. It was released on 30th January 2017. The main actors are Alfie Stewart as Charlie and Anton Saunders as Lee.

The story is breathtaking because the actors communicate strong feelings and emotions. The relationship between the father and his son was really realistic and intense.

Their faces expressions were well played, that is why the plot is very convincing.

The film deals with a racing competition but it also about a complicated relation between the father and his son. There are a lot of contrasts between a son full of ambition and a father who, in his youth, had the same personality. The script was excellent. The most striking scene is the driving during the race, it was really intense and we were worried for him. This short film shows that the family is more important than the pride of winning. It made us feel touched by the story and it made us think about our relation with our family.

We would recommend to people who are emotional. It’s a great piece of film-making.

KIN (This is England festival)

Kin is a fifteen-minute fiction directed by Helena Middleton.

Kin was rewarded the price of the best short film in the festival « This is England ».

The film was heartbreaking because the relationship between the little and the big brother was very intense and touching. This film is very realistic because it deals with the separation of siblings, which is something that often happens, and the life of  children in family care homes.

Subtitles were written at the bottom of the screen in French, which helped us to better understand dialogues.

The cast performance was brillant. Another thing we really liked was the fact that the plot was well shot. The most captivating scene is when the big brother entered in the family care home to take his brother’s file and get to know why the custody was denied.

When we watched the film we felt a little bit sad, we saw people crying in the cinema. We were impressed by the emotions that emerged from this film.

It’s a very impressive portrayal of the relationship between brothers and the difficulties they have had to cope with since their mother died.

On a scale from zero to five we give this film a five !

It’s a must see !!

SHEEPO !

df: If a shearer shouts ‘Sheepo!’ it means there’s only one sheep left in his pen.

Sheepo is a four-minute documentary directed by Ian Robertson and released in March 2016 in the UK. This short film was rewarded : Only Premiere-NOWNESS; Official selection-sheffield Int. Doc / Fest 2016; Glasgow Int. short film festival 2016; Edimburg Int. short film festival 2016…

Sheepo is actually about a real shearer. The director wanted to show him as an athlete. He also wanted to compare shearing to a competition. Indeed, at the beginning of this short film, the man is getting prepared : he gets dressed, prepares his equipment, tires his shoes as a footballer or a boxer in a locker room. In fact, the shearer shears the sheep in just 55 seconds. Shearing competitions exist in some countries like New Zealand, Australia… In these countries, the shearers are respected and they can have some prices like money if they win. During shearing competitions, the shearer says that it’s better to have one sheep ahead. We can hear the sound of the timer, which made us excited and stressed out.

The shots are beautiful and enthralling. Another thing we really like is the fact that the film was shot in a special way. Some parts are slow and some others are faster. In Sheepo, the man explains how to shear the fastest way.  It’s like a battle between the sheep and the shearer, for instance, we can see how he catches the « beast ». The script is simple and easy to understand. The message of this short film might be : whatever your job is, you have to do your best and take up the challenge.

On a scale from 0 to 5 we give this short film a 4. It’s a great piece of film with originality and a good subject.

Firecracker

Firecracker  (15min) was released in 2016 and directed by Jonathan K. HARRIS. This fiction shows a son and his father who both enjoy driving. The father is so much in debt that he accepts a deal : a man will give him some money if his son loses the next race and lets his own son win.

We love this short film mainly because it was perfectly shot and the work on the lights in the indoors scenes is amazing. The casting is very good and the violence as well as the intensity of the race is perfectly shown.

The hard dilemma that the young man is dealing with is food for thought, it makes us think! The script is awesome and the ending reinforces the impact of the film. The most striking scene is when the son looks at the winner passing next to him, then the father and the son look at each other. The plot is very profound. Grey is the main color in the film, the weather and the lights are always dark and  it well embodies the sadness and the troubles of this family.

It makes us feel troubled and thoughtful. In the same time we were also joyful because this short film is awesome.

On a scale from zero to five, we would give this film a four because it was very cool and pleasant . It’s a must see, we enjoyed watching this film.
