BOOK REVIEW : The fault in our stars

The fault in our stars was written by John Green in 2008.
This book is probably my favorite book. Normally, I hate books with a love story with a lot of stereotypes.
But I am totally in love of this book, beacause there are many beautiful quotes and I love all of the people in the story, their characters, their feelings or vision of life. This is about Hazel Grace’s life. She has had a cancer for seven years. She doesn’t attend school anymore, and her only activity is to attend a group with a lot of people in the same situation as her. She is very pessimistic, but, one day, she meets a handsome boy with a lovely mind and who is having a a cancer too… They fall in love very fast and they live a  three- month beautiful love story.
This story made me think a lot and now I have realised that everything can stop at any moment. I loved reading this book, as it was very emotional. I think this book is a lesson about life for everybody.

The Consultant

Author : Rupert Morgan

Type of book : short novel

A group work is on a business training in the middle of the Indian ocean on a little island when one day, they woke up without electricity and communication with the world. They have no water and food. So  the people become bad and sad… but one person  will take the power and start a dictatorship. James, the main character, and marianne, his girlfriend, will escape from the island on a boat they made and they will sail away.

I recommand reading this book because the story is pleasant. It is not a short story, but not a very long one either. I think reading this book is a very good way to improve your vocabulary and listening skill, without any boring moments. It is very quick to read this book, only a few hours.

Distant Echo by Janice Hally

It was written in 2010 and the story takes place in France

An American woman, Marilyn, lost her memory after an accident during her holidays with her fiancé in France.

She went to a French psychiatric’s service after her accident because she had lost her native language. Then she met M.Lelong who became her doctor. They both retreated in a castle to start a new psychiatric program with as little contact with other people as possible. Then Marilyn could just remember pieces of her past life.

Many adventures happened to the two people who became friends.

I really liked this book : I don’t often read books in English but this one wasn’t boring. I finished Distant Echo in two weeks.

If you like psychiatric thrillers, read this one.

The Fortunes of John de Courcy by Philipa Boston

The Fortunes of John de Courcy was written by Philipa Boston, an English writer.

There are a lot of characters : the hero, John de Courcy, his friend,, Harry, a young woman Maude, the Duke of Gloucester and his nephew, Edgard Harridge, the Prelate, and others…

The story takes place in the year 1582, when there is a big conflict between the Protestants and the Catholics. In Oxford, John de Courcy, a young Protestant philosopher, was chosen by the Duke to be the new Gloucester Scholar. It was a big privilege in that place. But some people did not agree with this choice because John was a Protestant. These Catholic people made a plot and accused him of stealing the treasure of the Duke. To be able to prove his innocence, John must investigate with the help of his friends Harry and Maude, to find the real thief. He rubbed shoulders with different social backgrounds like prostitutes and also witches…

I loved this book because the story was interesting even if it was a little bit strange. There are sudden developments and the characters are developed and interesting. I did not have too many difficulties (but I often used a dictionary ). I think it is adapted to my level in English.

The Tulip Touch by Anne Fine

It’s a dramatic book written in 1996.
Natalie, a young girl, is the main character, her father is a hotel manager. He decides to buy a new hotel called « the Palace ».
It is a new life for Natalie’s family. In this new town, Natalie meets Tulip and they become very close. But Tulip’s father is strange and violent with his daughter.
Tulip and Natalie play strange games, for example, they scare Natalie’s brother in the woods. Tulip is appreciated by Natalie’s family and she spends a lot of time in their hotel but Natalie’s parents learn that Tulip is strange, so Natalie stops their friendship.
Tulip is so offended at not being invited for Christmas when usually Natalie invited him. Tulip burns down the Palace. Then the family buys a new hotel and Natalie starts from scratch.
I liked reading a book in English, it was the first time. I think I did not understand all the details but I understood the most important part of the story.
I did not fall asleep while reading.
I think it is an interesting story so I recommand you to read it, if you like this type of book.

The Ghost Marriage

This book tells us a story about a girl named Jiang Meilin. She disappeared in Pekin, so inspectors come to find her. The principal inspector is Li Yan, but with him, there are other inspectors like Bureau Chief Chen who is an inferior officer or Margaret Campbell who is an American pathologist.

In the story, we can meet the parents of the « missing girl », her brother and her boyfriend who is a very nice character but I suspected him …

I didn’t really like this book because first, it was very difficult and I thought I would like the story but finally not that much. I could not read all the book because it was very hard for me, the vocabulary was complicated and the sentences were long and difficult.

Still, if you like detective stories, you can try…

Someone like you by Roal Dahl

During my hollidays, I read « Someone like you« , a short story by Roal Dalh.

This story is about a conversation between two men in a bar. We can’t say it is a real story, but I think this conversation is very interesting.

This dialogue is between two old friends, one of the two has been to the war, so he is very touched. This man has seen some horrible things, and he tries to tell his adventures to his old friend.

After many many Whiskeys, glass after glass, stories and confidences, the conversation becomes incomprehensible.

It is very difficult to have a real opinion about this story, because it is not a story like any other. It can be very difficult to understand, the conversation becomes nonsense talk and for a French reader like me, it is too difficult ! Yet I didn’t have big difficulties with the words.

I didn’t like it very much because it is not a real story but I didn’t hate it either.

Best Detective Stories of Agatha Christie

It gathers seven short stories written by Agatha Christie around 1930.
My favorite was The Learned Hydra which tells the strory of a doctor, Mr Oldfield, living in a small town. His wife died a year earlier and the inhabitants of the town spread the rumour that he killed his wife in order to marry a nurse.
Mr Oldfield asked Mr Poireau, a very good detective, to help him to find the real murderer.

I liked reading this book because I found interesting to know how Mr Poireau succeeded in discovering the truth which is always very surprising und unexpected.

The Short Second of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

The Short Second of Bree Tanner tells the story of a newborn vampire, Bree Tanner, 15 years old, who is featured in the third book of the series, Eclipse. She has been changed by Victoria (an enemy of Cullens; the Cullens are the main family in the series) with 20 other new-borns. Victoria created a vampire’s army to kill Cullens.

The story is about Bree’s three months as a vampire and the last fight (at the end of Eclipse). It tells how she suvirved in this army and how she tried to control her instincts as a vampire.

Trough her life, she met Diego, another newborn. He becam her friend the her boyfriend. Diego died at the end of the book because he was too curious and too smart. He knew too many things about vampires so he was killed by the leader of the army, Riley.

Then they went to fight Cullens but all the army died except foe Bree. Cullens saved her because she gave way. Then the Volturi came ( the vampire’s police who tried to make the vampire’s secret unknown by humans) and killed Bree Tanner.

The book is written from Bree’s viewpoint. I enjoyed it so much ! The girl is really nice, smart and really funny. I like when you feel the feelings of the character. It lakes the story real and you can identify with Bree. You can feel she is lost as a newborn and the way she became so happy when she met Diego.

I learnt many words in English about a vampire’s life.

I enjoy this author, I lvoe the way she writes.

It was my first book in English and it makes me want to read more !

« Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse » by Rick Riordan

« Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse » was written by Rick Riordan. The style is a fantasy story.
It talks about Greek mythology with Greek Gods, surnatural cretatures and Half Gods. There are two aspects in the story: his life as a teenager, and his life as Half-God in relation with Greek mythology.
There are different characters: the main character, Percy Jackson who is Poseidon’s son; Groover, he is Percy’s best friend and he protects him all the time. Luke who is the bad man. Annabeth is Athena’s daughter and she is Percy’s friend, sharing his adventures.
There are a lot of other characters but they are less important.

Annabeth Chase, Thalia Grace and Percy Jackson leave to find two half Gods in a military school. During the rescue, Annabeth is kidnapped by the principal, who is in fact a manticore. Saved by Artemis’ Hunters (goddess of hunting) and Artemis herself, they explain to their two new friends, brother and sister, Bianca and Nico di Angelo, their conditions of Half Gods.

In the morning, Artemis leaves on her side to hunt one of the most dangerous monsters. Hunters and Half Gods then go to the Half-Blood Colony.

Artemis is then in turn kidnapped.

I really love Percy Jackson’s story because I am passionate about Greek mythology, its monsters and the various Gods’ lives.
However, I haven’t finished this book because it was too hard to understand for me and I don’t like reading and not understanding what I read.

The Outlander, by Gil Adamson

The Outlander is a novel written by the famous Canadian author Gil Adamson, mixing suspense, adventure and tragedy.

I think this story is really well written because I could easily imagine the widow, the main character’s brain. One interesting thing about this book is that you don’t know her name.

I found not ordinary the fact that the main character is totally pitiful and desperate. It kind of makes you think about what you would do in that same situation, lost in the middle of the Canadian forest during the 19th century ; would you flee just like the widow, too scared and mentally ill to turn around and fight? Or would you face the wolves, the hunger, the thirst and the brothers of your husband murdered by your own hand who both want their revenge?

Frankenstein , Mary Shelley

I have read Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley and I find the plut very good and the story is very interesting.
It is the story of a scientist : Victor who wants to resolve the equation about the creation of life, Victor wants to create a new race , more noble and beautiful than human race. When he finds the solution of this equation, he creates  » the life  » : a monster called Frankenstein who is very ugly and noble at all ! Victor leaves him alone because he is scared of Frankenstein.
One night when Victor was walking alone, he saw the monster in a street, the next day, he learns that his brother was killed during the night. He remembers when he saw Frankenstein but he doesn’t say anything about him because he thinks that if he said to someone he saw the monster like Frankenstein, he would be considered as a crazy man and he would be locked into an Asijlum.
To conclude , according to me , Frankenstein is a little too difficult to understand because of the vocabulary. I think I will read it in french First and then in English to understand it better !

ADRIAN MOLE

During the christmas holidays , I read one of Sue Townsend’s books called Adrian Mole.

It is a teenager’s diary : Adrian wrote in it everyday about his life.I think it was a little bit boring because the story was very common : just the life of a teenager. It deals with some ordinary things like the dog he lost, the gossips of the neighborhood .It talks about Adrian’s  bestfriend called Nagel. It’s also about his first love.

It reminds me of a book which I read last year :  » Diary of a wimpy kid ». It’s kind of the same story.

Except for the boring aspect, I find it was interesting to read this book because I learned many English words.

So even if the book was long, I don’t regret the time I spent reading it.

The Promise, by Eva Schloss

It’s the true story of a Jewish family (Erich the father called Pappy, Elfriede the mother called Mutty, Heinz the son, and Eva the daughter called Evi) during the  2nd World War.

This book was really moving because we can think ‘ And if it was me…’ We see all the horror that the Jewish people endured.

During the Summer holidays, I visited ‘ Anne Frank ‘s House ‘ in Amsterdam, so when I read the story, it reminded me of the things that I saw there.

Moreover, Anne was Evi’s friend.

Pappy always reminds to Evi that : ‘Everything is connected, like a chain that cannot be broken ‘, and during all the reading, we could see that it’s really true. For ewample, when they needed the help of a doctor, Mutty found a member of her family, who was a nurse, among maybe one hundred people or more ! !

I enjoyed this book but I think that it may be too sad for some people…

Percy Jackson the lightning Thief , Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson, dyslexic and hotheaded, has been kicked out of yet another school. But stranger things are happening around him, and soon he finds himself at Camp Half-Blood, a refuge and training ground for children of the Greek gods, who are still around and causing trouble for humans. He discovers that his dyslexia is caused by his brain being hardwired for Greek, and his hotheadedness is because, well, he’s a hero.

All too soon he discovers which god is his father, and that he is a pawn in a titanic battle between the gods that may ignite World War III. Accompanied by a daughter of Athena and a young Satyr, Percy is sent to retrieve Zeus’ lightning bolt from Hades, who supposedly stole it. But things are even more complicated than he and the gods imagined, and there are dangerous plots afoot.

In my opinion , I enjoyed this book because it was really moving and I recommends this book for the people who likes the  fantastic books

« The English Patient »

This romantic novel was written in 1992 by Michael Ondaatje, who had the canadian nationality.

Most of the time, the story is taking place in a cloister in Toscane, Italy. There are four main characters; hana an attentive nurse, a mysterious burnt man who is called « the English patient », David Caravaggio and Kip a mine clearance expert. all the characters have different nationalities but all are secretly joined, particulary the english patient and David.

At first, I have to say that the scenes took place in 1944, at the end og the 2nd World War. Hana is trying to keep he mysterious man alive. The authour makes the reeder travel all around the World with flash backs of anterior life of the english patient. A love story troubles Hana and Kip and instore a strange atmosphere in the quiet cloister. But Hana thinks she is cursed because she saw her fiancé and her best friends died during the war and thinks that all the people she loves ar killed by her own fault.

This book is a little bit hard to read but the passion is always there and contribute  to never get borred during the reading !

What I loved most is the ambiguity created by suspition, as Hana said  » We are in war, nationalities become important » and the way that the author describes the past of everyone is extraordinary! It is a magic book, very rich in vocabulary !

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K.Rowling

I read the book by J.K.Rowling, an English novelist, which is called « Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ». I liked it: there is plenty of suspense. This is the only Harry Potter that I read because I have seen them all in movies.

I don’t like the books about wizard, magic with suspense but this is well written and leads us into the story, so I tought it was great.

The main characters are Harry and his two best friends, Ron and Hermione. I love the three characters but my favorite character is Ron because he is funny and a little stupid.

« Panic Room » by James Ellison

I am going to talk about a book named Panic Roomby James Ellison, written in 2002.

This book talks about Meg Altam and her daughter Sarah, who have bought a new home in New York. In this house, there is a room, so secure that no one can get in. It’s called the panic room. Then, three criminals get into the house. Meg makes a move to the panic room.                                                                                                                                                                                                    But, she didn’t know that the criminals want the money that is hidden in a safe in the panic room. Worse, Sarah, her daughter, is diabetic and she can’t have access to her insulin.

To start with, I chose this book because I saw the film when I was younger and I really liked it. I did enjoy the book though, mostly the intensity. The suspense was present and the book held me until the end.                                                 However, the story had a very slow start, most of the first part of the book was description. I can’t deny that I prefer the movie to the book because the suspense and the intensity are better represented.

To conclude, the book was really good and I learnt a lot of new words !

« The Old Man and the Sea » by Ernest Hemingway

« The Old Man and the Sea » is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) an American author. It was written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952.

The story is about an old Cuban fisherman, called Santiago, who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. With this hugely successful novel, Ernest Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.

This book is short ; there are only ninety-nine pages… But I think that it was not so easy to read it in English beacause the author uses technical words of fishing, that I did not know. Many times, it was hard for me to understand.

However, I liked reading this book for many reasons. First, I learnt many words such as : tuna, bait, oars, skiff, sharks…

I think that the friendship between Santiago, the old man, and Manolin, the young boy, is touching. It is a friendship between two different generations… Even if Manolin has been forbidden by his parents to sail with Santiago, each night, he used to go to Santiago’s shack to get him food and to talk about American baseball ; his favorite player is Joe DiMaggio. At the end, when the old man returns, Manolin suggests that they once more fish together.

I think that the story is a little bit sad because Santiago is not so lucky ;  » he had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish ». Santiago is considered « salao« , « which is the worst form of unlucky ». And it is also sad, because he has been injured by the fish which did not want to die.

In my opinion, there is a moral in this book : whoever your are, you must not give up and you must do your best to obtain what you want.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone

This book is the first of the seven books about the story of Harry, during his seven years at the school of Hogwarts. Harry is a boy who lost his parents early and live with his aunt his uncle (who hate him both)and his cousin, who is as stupid as he is mean.

One day, a giant named Hagrid comes at Dursley’s and says to Harry that he is, in fact, a wizard, and he has to go to Hogwarts, the wizards school, to study magic.

At Hogwarts, he makes friends, Ron and Hermione, and learns that his parents were killed by a pitiless wizard, Voldemort, who tried to kill Harry, but he survived.

During the year, Harry and his friends will discover that Snape, a teacher of Hogwarts, want to take for Voldemort the Philosopher’s stone (which can make the elixir of immortality), hidden in the school. And they try to prevent it.

If the saga of Harry Potter is so famous, it is because this is so well written, that everyone can read it. A lot of humour and suspense, and a very interesting story. I recommend you to read the book, even if you didn’t like the film. Just read it, and judje after.

Best Detective Stories of Agatha Christie

I read Best Dectective Stories of Agatha Christie. There are several stories written by Agatha Christie.

My favourite is The Mystery of Hunter’s Lodge. The famous detective Hercule Poirot has to find the murderer of a killer in a cottage house. But Poirot is sick and can’t leave his bed. And what I find so impressive is that even if he stays at home, he quickly gesses who the murderer is. I find it very interesting with a lot of suspense. And it is the one that I understand best.

Some stories are very difficult to understand, such as The Million Dollar Bond Robbery.

I have already read Agatha Christie’s novels and I loved all of them. These stories have not changed my opinion about Agatha Christie.

« Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire » by J.K Rowling

During my holidays, I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This one is not my favourite, however I like it.

My favourite passage is when Harry and the Weasley family attended the Quidditch World Cup. I love how J.K Rowling describes the camp where they sleep, but my favoutrite is when they watch the match. It’s just amazing!!

My favourite character was and still is Severus Snape because to me he is cool and a little funny. I also like all the other characters, even if I think that Fleur Delacour (one of the participant of the Triwizard Tournament) is too superficial and a bit silly.

Finally, I like this book because in this one, the story advance a lot and it’s a very good mix of funny and serious things.
